Gadolinium iron alloy is used to replace gadolinium in NdFeB, which can improve the yield and reduce the cost of NdFeB magnets. It is prepared by industrial scale electrolysis with GdF3-LiF binary system as electrolyte, pure iron as cathode, graphite as anode and gadolinium oxide as raw material.
It is mainly used as an additive for NdFeB permanent magnets to improve performance. It is also utilized in nuclear reactor tube materials, magnetic refrigeration working media, magneto-optical recording materials for hydrogen storage alloy substrates, special steels, and non-ferrous alloy additives.
